In spite of the growing interest in both newspaper strips and reprint-books, there was a backlash from certain sectors of American society. This shared much in common with the British attack on comics: the mix of words and pictures was similarly said to be intrinsically lowbrow, trashy and detrimental to 'proper' reading. However, what was different about the American experience was that the inherent class prejudice took on religious and racial overtones. Most importantly, some extreme Christians resented the fact that the comics were published on a Sunday: the fact that the comics were reaching immigrant populations in the cities, who were not necessarily Christian themselves, added an extra dimension to their objections.
