But the new interdependency may also have important long-term consequences for the comics industry. Movies, of course, can be very lucrative; and who can blame the comics publishers for making hay while the sun shines? But they can also serve another function: as an escape route in times of crisis. To be specific, the current emphasis in the enclosed world of fandom on comics collectability, with its ridiculous associations with gimmicky covers and the like, is a very fragile basis on which to plan the future of the business. Sooner or later the bubble has to burst, as fans realize that they are being conned, and when that happens the consequences for the shop network could be dire. Under those circumstances, publishers would be very wise to have a life-raft at the ready, and their movie connections might prove to be the obvious answer.
